Local man charged in copper thefts

THOMASVILLE — Police used Thomas County Jail mugshots to track down a man suspected of stealing copper downspouts from several Thomasville buildings, including two churches.

Police had alerted area scrap yards about the thefts and asked personnel to be on the lookout for someone selling copper downspouts.

On Tuesday afternoon, detectives learned some of the stolen copper might be at a Tallahassee, Fla., scrap yard.

Detective Louis Schofill went to the Tallahassee business and learned the identity of the suspect.

“We realized this metal had to be sold to a scrap yard,” Schofill said Wednesday.

Armed with jail mugshots of Demetirius Demarion Walden, detectives and patrol officers began looking for the suspect Tuesday afternoon. Officers found Walden walking in the 100 block of Victoria Place and took him into custody.

Copper downspouts were taken from First United Methodist Church, the Salvation Army church, Thomasville Family Medicine, Archbold Ambulatory Center, South Georgia Neurological Institute and Trio Therapy Service.
