Primary Care of Southwest Georgia joins campaign

THOMASVILLE — Although a 2012 study by the Federal Emergency Management Agency reveals that 46% of respondents believe a natural disaster will occur in their community, nearly 70% of Americans have not participated in a preparedness drill or exercise within the past two years.

“America’s PrepareAthon! is a nationwide, community-based campaign for action to increase emergency preparedness and resilience,” said Chief Executive Officer for Primary Care of Southwest Georgia Inc., Dr. Ann Addison. “We are proud to be a participant.”

Each spring and fall, organizations across the country focus on preparedness during a national day of action, she said. The days of action drive participation in hazard-specific drills, group discussions and exercises. Addison said her organization’s goal is increase the number of people who:

Recognize which disasters could happen in Southwest Georgia

Know what to do to be safe and reduce potential risks from disasters

Practice drills and share information to better prepare communities

Participate in community resilience planning

“To reach these goals, we at Primary Care of Southwest Georgia, Inc. will join members of the regional healthcare coalition in identifying and addressing planning gaps and healthcare resource needs in the region’s 17-county service area,” Dr. Addison said.

“We will also participate in a Public Health communications drill on April 30 to test their emergency notification system for healthcare partners,” she said. “The drill will help us practice sharing vital, life-saving information among healthcare partners in the event of a disaster.”
