Disability Employment Awareness Month observed

Staff report

THOMASVILLE — Mayor Max Beverly proclaimed October as Disability Employment Awareness Month.

Held each October, National Disability Employment Awareness Month (NDEAM) is a national campaign that raises awareness about disability employment issues and celebrates the many and varied contributions of America's workers with disabilities.

This year's theme is "A Strong Workforce is an Inclusive Workforce: What Can YOU Do?"

While there have been advancements in independent living and accessibility, the employment rate of people with disabilities is low.

“All of us have a role to play in reversing this inequity. Employers must foster workplaces welcoming to all qualified employees and potential employees. People with disabilities must understand the intrinsic value of work and their role in our economic success,” said Michael Edwards, rehabilitation employment specialist with the Georgia Vocational Rehabilitation Services Agency.
