Brookwood juniors ship gifts to soldiers in Kuwait

THOMASVILLE — When Maureen Harrer, a Brookwood School art teacher, heard that a Brookwood alumnus, Capt. Brent Bond, would miss coming home for Christmas, she thought her junior class homeroom students might like to send a “care package” to the Army captain in Kuwait.

That initial idea grew into a carload of boxes filled with items from a “wish list” submitted by Bond for his fellow soldiers: candy, health bars, chips, Christmas decorations, games and movies, among other gifts.

Juniors in Harrer and English teacher Carolyn Nicholson’s homeroom, along with numerous parents, jumped on the bandwagon with contributions to the stack of 11 boxes, now en route to Bond, who is on the staff at Battalion Command Headquarters in the oil-rich Arab country of Kuwait. The 11th graders also included personal notes and Christmas cards.
