Services for Ray Vaughn Umphries Jr., are 2 p.m. Monday at Whiddon-Shiver Funeral Home Chapel. The Rev. Chris Lodge will officiate and interment is in Laurel Hill Cemetery. Active pallbearers are Nicholas Cashwell, Adam Bengston, Mason Miller, Wayne White, Stanley Jordan and Joseph Jordan. Mr. Umphries was born May 5, 1921, in Thomasville, to the late Ray Vaughn Umphries Sr. and Jessie Dean Umphries. He married Shirley Virginia Reynolds Umphries March 17, 1956, in Thomasville. Mr. Umphries was a United States Navy World War II veteran. He was of the Baptist faith and a member of the National Rifle Association. He retired after working 31 years with the U.S. Postal Service. Mr. Umphries died May 17, 2008, at his residence in Thomasville. Survivors include his wife; daughters, Terri White (Wayne) of Meigs, Vicki DeSantis of Thomasville, Gayle Palensky of Cantonmet, Fla.; granddaughter, Christi Miller (Mason) of Cairo; grandsons, Nicholas Cashwell (Jessie) of Thomasville, Adam Bengston and fiancé Jessie of Pavo; step-grandson, Trey DeSantis (Stephanie) of Bradfordville, Fla.; and, three great-grandsons Hayden and Camden Miller of Cairo and Ty Cashwell of Thomasville. He was preceded in death by brothers Winfred and Sterling Umphries and son-in-law Pete DeSantis. The family will receive friends 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home. — Whiddon-Shiver Funeral Home
