Dr. Charles Kenneth Singleton Sr.



Dr. Charles Kenneth Singleton Sr., of Newnan, died on Monday, Nov. 3, 2008, in Altus House, 5411 Northland Drive, Atlanta. Private family services were held on Tuesday in Newnan. Born Oct. 4, 1923, in Peoria, Ill., he was a son of Charles W. Singleton and Maud Burel Singleton. He attended Emory University for three years in undergraduate studies. Feeling the call to serve our country, he enlisted in the Marines. Coming back to Georgia, he was accepted at the Medical College of Georgia in Augusta and completed his studies in 1950. A former resident of Cairo and a beloved physician, he opened his office for practice in 1952 and retired in 1990. After retirement, he worked at Archbold Memorial Hospital emergency room for several years. He and his wife, Lucile, moved on Dec. 10, 2005, to Newnan to be near their children. He was a longtime member of the First United Methodist Church in Cairo. On his move to Newnan, he moved his membership to Cokes Chapel United Methodist Church in Sharpsburg where he attended as long as his health permitted. Dr. Singleton is survived by his wife of 60 years, Lucile Hinely Singleton, of Newnan; children, Charles Kenneth Singleton Jr. and wife, Leigh, of Nashville, Tenn., Mary Singleton Childs and husband, Buddy, of Cumming, Shirley Singleton Beeson and husband, Terry, of Peachtree City, Martica Singleton Spake and husband, Ken, of Newnan, Sue Singleton of Havana, Fla., Jane Singleton Stewart and husband, Roger, of Fayetteville, N.C.; grandchildren, George and Terry Childs of Cumming, Chad and Heather Childs of Alpharetta, Keri and Jim Birgl of Monterey, Calif., Matthew Beeson, Athens, Grady Singleton of Nashville, Tenn.; great-grandchildren, Adam Birgl of Monterey, Georgia Childs of Cumming, and C. K. Floyd Childs of Alpharetta. Memorials may be made to the Altus House, 5411 Northland Drive, Atlanta, Ga. 30342, or Cokes Chapel United Methodist Church, 4096 Lower Fayetteville Rd., Sharpsburg, Ga. 30277. — Clark Funeral Home
