Francis Hansell "Hank" Watt Jr.

THOMASVILLE — Francis Hansell "Hank" Watt Jr., of Gordonsville, Va., died on June 15, 2014. Hank was born on May 4, 1955, in Puerto Rico to Francis Hansell Watt M.D. and the late Henrietta Hicks Watt M.D. He is survived by his wife Margaret "Margie" Best Watt. In addition to his beloved Margie, Hank is survived by his father, Francis Hansell Watt M.D. and six sisters: Lindsey Watt March, Helen Watt, Laura Watt Casati (Bill), Sarah Watt Hearn (Tom), Jamie Watt Jones, and Carolyn Watt Cantwell (Jeff). Hank was the "Pied Piper" to 16 nieces and nephews and seven great-nieces and -nephews. His step-grandmother, Gladys Havey Hicks survives as well. Also surviving are his parents-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Douglas Stuart Best; stepdaughter, Lindsay Carter Diamond; stepson, Patrick Blake Brown; sister-in-law Laura Best Hill; and brother-in-law Benjamin Parker Best. Hank grew up in Tallahassee, Fla., and attended Leon High School, graduating from The McCallie School in Chattanooga, Tenn., where he received the Bibb Bible Award for excellence in biblical studies. He studied psychology and horticulture at Southwestern at Memphis (now Rhodes College) graduating with honor in Psychology. Hank held many counseling positions with the Virginia Department of Corrections, most recently as a Cognitive Counselor at Culpeper Juvenile Detention Center. Hank loved life, enjoyed Scouting as a boy, and served as an elder in the Presbyterian church. He shared his faith, a love and talent for gardening and attracting backyard birds with his father; a love and talent for classical music and piano with his mother. He had a warm smile and quick wit, a welcoming word for strangers and friends alike, and — always — a bear hug for those he loved. A graveside service will be held at 10 a.m., June 28, 2014, at Laurel Hill Cemetery, Thomasville. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m., at First Presbyterian Church, 425 E. Jackson St., Thomasville. — Whiddon-Shiver Funeral Home
