James “Joe” Ross

THOMASVILLE — Funeral services for James “Joe” Ross, 77, of Thomasville will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, January 16, 2014 at First Missionary Baptist Church.  Rev. Jeremy G. Rich, Pastor, Rev. Charlie Ross officiating services with interment to follow at Peaceful Rest Cemetery.  Pallbearers will be Leroy Hudson, Roderick Floyd, Leroy Johnson, Gary Ross, Edgar Ford, Jr. and John Ross.  James Ross, known to many as “Joe”, was born on March 11, 1936 to the late Roscoe and Bertha Mae Hill Ross in Metcalf, GA.  Mr. Ross was educated in Thomas County.  At a young age his working career began at the Metcalf Saw Mill.  He was later employed at Sunnyland Packing Company for more than 25 years.  His most beloved passion was cultivating land.  He was well known for creating beautiful landscapes in various subdivisions.  He also planted huge gardens that he often shared with the community.  Mr. Ross’ spiritual life modeled that of the vineyard parable found in Matthew 20: 1-16.  He joined First Unity Missionary Baptist Church on September 22, 2002 and was baptized on October 5, 2002.  There he worked diligently on the Trustee Board and in the finance room.  He loved his church family as his own.  On October 15, 1959 he married Johnnie Mae Payne.  TO this union there were 10 children.  He leaves to cherish his memory a devoted wife Johnnie Mae Ross; sons Larry Ross (Jennifer), Freddie Ross (Priscilla), Roscoe Ross and Ben Ross all of Thomasville; daughters Jewel Simmons (Gerald) of Bainbridge, Samantha Bryant (Zack) of Augusta, Pamela Ross, Selena Ross, Kesha Ross and Yolanda Ross all of Thomasville; brothers Ralph Ross, Jessie “Bobby” Ross and Rev. Charlie Ross (Minnie) all of Thomasville; sisters Irene Thomas and Mable Johnson of Thomasville, Helen Reynolds (Nathan) of Miccosukee, FL and Christine Ford (Edgar) of Thomasville; 31 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren; uncle L.C. Ross (Bernice) of Miami, FL; aunts Juanita Davis of Cleveland, OH, Dorothy Ross of Miami, FL, Alean Ross of Atlanta, Mable Williams of Philadelphia, PA, Peggy Ross of Cocoa, FL and Bessie Mae Hill of Thomasville; daughters-in-law Genoris Ross and Wendy Ross both of Thomasville; brother-in-law John Henry Payne (Carrie) of Atlanta; sisters-in-law Clara Ross of Thomasville, Vineva Payne of Monticello, FL and Rosa Lee Payne Copers of Miccosukee, FL; special friends Hamp McMillan and Miledge Hill; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.  Visitation will be held on Wednesday, January 15, 2014 from 10:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m. and a Family Hour from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m at First Unity Missionary Baptist Church, 1806 Fletcher St., Thomasville.  Family and friends are asked to meet at 9:30 a.m. at 113 Florida Ave. for the processional. The remains will lie instate from 10:00 a.m. until the funeral hour with no viewing following the eulogy.  The family will receive friends at Receptions for You, 1200 W.
