Dr. Henry D. Fortson Jr.

Services for Dr. Henry D. Fortson, Jr. are at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, July 7, 2012, atSummerhill Missionary Baptist Church, 301 Love Street NW, Pelham, Georgia 31779. The Reverend Derrick Calhoun, officiating and the Reverend Charlie Dunbar III, eulogy. Interment is in Pelham Memorial Gardens, Old Camilla Road, Pelham. Honorary pallbearers are members  of Mu Beta Beta, Omega Psi Phi Fraternity Inc. Dr. Fortson died July 1 in Thomasville. Born September 11, 1947  in Haines City, Florida, he was the son of Henry David Fortson Sr. and Nancy Calhoun Fortson. His church affiliations include St. Marks AME Church in Haines City, Florida, Central Baptist Church in Kingsport, Tennessee and attended New Hope Missionary Baptist Church, Pelham, Georgia. He was a member of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity — Mu Beta Beta Chapter, Order of Prince Hall Freemasonry, Georgia Dental Society, National Dental Society, Georgia Dental Association and YMCA — Thomasville, GA. He attended Haines City School System in Haines City, Florida and graduated from Daytona College, Daytona, Florida, Knoxville College, Knoxville, Tennessee and Meharry Medical College, Nashville, Tennessee. He worked for Holston Defense in Kingsport, TN as a chemist and practiced dentistry in Thomasville, GA. Henry was devoted to his family: (wife) Debra Fortson; (children) Henry D. Fortson III (Alicia) Thomasville, GA, Dennis Gregory Fortson (Terri) Tucker, GA, Tosha L. Jones (Marcus) Powder Springs, GA and William Christopher Fortson, Statesboro, GA; (siblings) Edgar Fortson (Virginia) Norfolk, VA, Dr. James K. Fortson (Deborah) Stone Mountain, GA, and Loletha Fortson, Temple, TX; (grandchildren) Justin Fortson, Jalyn Jones, Jordan Jones, Sydney Fortson, Montoya Hubbard, Brandon and Terrell Taylor; and a host of aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, nephews and godchildren. He was preceded in death by his father, Henry David Fortson, Sr.; mother, Nancy Calhoun Fortson; and sister, Betty Jean Fortson. In lieu of flowers, the family has requested donations for scholarships be made to Bank of America, Debra Fortson – Dr. Henry D Memorial Account, Acct. # 3340-3467-7336. Visitation is from noon to 8 p.m., today at the funeral home. — Grooms Funeral Home
