James L. Hartsfield


THOMASVILLE — Graveside funeral services for James L. Hartsfield, 88, of Cairo, GA, are at 2:00 p.m., Wednesday, February 19, 2014, in Forest Lawn Cemetery, Cairo, GA.  Rev. Allen Hartsfield and Rev. Richard Hartsfield will officiate.  Mr. Hartsfield passed away at the Presbyterian Home and Retirement Community in Quitman, GA, on Monday, February 17, 2014.  Mr. Hartsfield was born on March 29, 1925, in Sarasota, FL, to the late J. Carl Hartsfield, Sr. and Myrtice Milligan Hartsfield.  He married Martha John Harrell Hartsfield on May 14, 1950.  Mrs. Hartsfield preceded him in death on May 3, 2006.  He served his country in the United States Navy on LST’s in WWII and was retired from the Grady County Board of Education Maintenance Department.  He was a member of the Cairo First Presbyterian Church.  Survivors include: sons, Richard Hartsfield of Cairo, GA, Allen Hartsfield (Kaye) of Thomasville, GA; daughter, Cary Dowse (Scott) of Valdosta, GA; grandchildren, Byron Hartsfield (Carine) of Brandon, FL, Sam Hartsfield of Duluth, GA, Jonathan Hartsfield of Athens, GA, Christopher Dowse of Valdosta, GA, Casey Dowse of Valdosta, GA; great-grandchildren, Jimmy and Miles Hartsfield of Brandon, FL; sister-in-law, Lois Clark (Buddy) of Cairo, GA; and a host of nieces and nephews.   He was preceded in death by: his parents, his wife; a grandchild, James Matthew Hartsfield; brothers, Robert Lee Hartsfield, Ernest Clair Hartsfield, J. Carl Hartsfield, Jr.; and a sister, Margaret Ellison.  Memorials may be made in Mr. Hartsfield’s memory to: The Caring Hands Fund, Presbyterian Home and Retirement Community, 1901 W.
