James P. Byrne

THOMASVILLE — Funeral services for James P. Bryne of Thomasville will be held at 6:00 p.m. on Wednesday, January 8, 2014 at Whiddon-Shiver Funeral Home Chapel.  Deacon John Blaha will officiate services.  Mr. Byrne was born on January 20, 1935 in Bronx, NY to the late James H. Byrne and Elizabeth Folk Byrne.  Mr. Byrne was a US Navy veteran of the Korean War. During hi career he served 4 years as a Sonarman and 13 years in the Navy Reserve. He would go on to become a retired Merchant Maine officer, serving 22 years with Mobile Oil Company.  His greatest love was his family and the sea.  He was a devoted husband, father and grandfather.  He went to sea at the age of 16 on a Danish Freighter “The Lena Dan” and he first sailed to the west coast of South Africa and continued to travel the world throughout his life.  Mr. Byrne departed this life on Saturday, January 4, 2014 at Archbold Memorial Hospital.  Survivors to cherish his memory include his wife Joanne Van Steenberg Byrne of Monticello, FL; daughters Karen Harper and Donna-Jean Cade (Juan) both of Thomasville; grandchildren Kristin Haas Meissner, Meredith R. Harper, Joshua M. and Tanesha Lara Harper, Chaiz Dent, Blaiz Dent and eight great-grandchildren.  He was preceded in death by his first, Joanna A. Tatarewitz Byrne on December 1, 2000.  In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the United States Merchant Marine Academy, P.O.
