Ocie Dale Williams Piland

Services for Ocie Dale Williams Piland will be held Wednesday morning at 11 a.m., at the Mitchell Chapel at Baptist Village Retirement Communities. Burial will follow in Oakland Cemetery. Ocie Dale Williams Piland, passed into eternity and into the arms of the Lord at 4 p.m., March 16, 2014. She is the widow of the late Andrew J. Piland, Jr. (A.J.), of Waycross, Georgia, and the daughter of the late Claude C. Williams and Katie Lou Hammett Williams, of Thomasville, Georgia. Ocie was born in Pelham, Georgia on Christmas day, December 25, 1923. She has been a resident of Waycross since 1951. Mrs. Piland will be remembered by her friends as a distinctive voice of the “Satilla Regional Hospital” where she worked as a switchboard operator for nearly twenty-six years. She first worked at the hospital as cashier in the cafeteria and then on the switchboard from 1966 to 1974. She then became the Church Secretary at Trinity United Methodist Church from 1975 to1985. She worked at the Church during the pastorates of the Reverend Joe Bridges, Reverend Cardy Edmundson, and Reverend Harold Tucker. She returned to the hospital switchboard in 1986 and remained there until her retirement in 2003. Mrs. Piland has been a resident of the Baptist Village Retirement Communities since 2004. She is survived by her son Andrew J. Piland, III (Andy) and daughter-in-law Beth Herrin Piland, of Valdosta, Georgia, her granddaughter Ashley Elizabeth Piland Backstrom and her husband Lawrence Keith Backstrom of Guntersville, Alabama, her granddaughter Catherine Herrin Piland Rogers and her husband Derek Michael Rogers, of Lawrenceville, Georgia, her great-grandchildren, Kaleigh Elizabeth Backstrom, Jordan Marie Backstrom, and Jonathan Keith Backstrom, of Guntersville, Alabama, Chloe Ann Piland Rogers of Lawrenceville, Georgia. Ocie is also survived by her sister Kathryn Ann Williams Wester, of Pavo, Georgia, her brother-in-law William E. Piland, Sr. (Bill) and his wife Sandra of Thomasville, Georgia, and their children William E. Piland, Jr. and his wife Pam and their daughters Jessica and Ashley Piland, of Fort Meyers, Florida, Dicky Piland and his wife Sherrie and their children Brett and Caitlyn of Dacula, Georgia, and Jennifer Piland Sheldon and her husband Michael and their children Meredith and Elizabeth of Marietta, Georgia, nephews Leon Preston Powell of Tallahassee, Florida and his daughter Sharon Sherrod, her husband and sons, and Michael Lee Tatum and his daughter Melanie Tatum of Lawrenceville, Georgia, nieces Sharon Powell and Janice Elaine Powell both of Tallahassee, Florida, Debbie Wester Maddox and her husband Fred, of Pavo, Georgia, Frankie Piland and his wife Laura of Houston, Texas, Daniel Joseph Parker and his wife Linda of Hartwell, Georgia, David Parker and his wife Linda of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma and their children Christopher and daughter Amanda Parker Sullins and her husband Eric, Barbara Parker Corbitt and her husband Donald of Hahira, Georgia, and their daughter Heather Corbitt of Cordele, Georgia.
