— Jean Ellen Cochran Reed, 96, of Greenville, SC widow of Frederick Edgar Reed, died Thursday, January 10, 2013.  Born on November 20, 1916 in Abbeville, SC she was the daughter of Ruth Syfan Cochran and Benjamin Thompson Cochran.   Mrs. Reed was educated in schools in Abbeville, SC and Greenwood, SC.  She graduated in 1938 from Lander University with majors in History and Biology.  Following graduation she taught school in South Carolina.  In 1942 she married Frederick who was from Crittenden, KY.  She lived in Ottumwa, IA during WW II and after moved to Greenwood, SC and later to Greenville, SC.  A charter member of Westminster Presbyterian Church in Greenville, she served as a Sunday school teacher, Circle leader, Bible leader, Youth Advisor, and Elder.  She received the Presbyterian Women’s Life Membership.  Mrs. Reed has been an active member of Westminster Presbyterian for 66 years.  Her love of children and her desire to help all those that are needy was exhibited in her support of charitable causes that would improve the lives of others.  She was an inspiration to all who knew her.  She supported her church, Meals on Wheels, Literacy Association, Presbyterian Home, United Way, and organizations in Conestee Falls at Brevard, NC.  She is survived by her five children, Frederick Edgar Reed, Jr. and wife, Grace Battey Reed of Charleston, SC, Katherine Reed Harmon and husband, Lawrence Albert Harmon of Thomasville, GA, Benjamin Allen Reed and wife, Martha Hudgens Reed, John William Reed and wife, Gretchen Taylor Reed, and Timothy Jackson Reed and wife, Susan Thomas Reed all of Greenville, SC; twelve grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.  A memorial service will be held at 2:30 p.m. on Sunday, January 13, 2013 at Westminster Presbyterian Church, Greenville, SC.  Visitation will follow the service in the church atrium.  In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Pastor's Fund of the First Presbyterian Church of Thomasville, GA, 225 East Jackson St., Thomasville, GA 31792 or the charity of one's choice.Condolences may be sent to the family by visiting www.thomasmcafee.com. — Thomas McAfee Funeral Home, Downtown.
