LETTER TO THE EDITOR: Don't believe anti-science hype

On the surface, some parts of Susan Brown’s editorials on climate change may seem rational and factual. However, a few minutes of research prove instead that they present complete distortions of reality.

She says, “the jury is still out,” claiming the IPCC,  Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, “so says.”

Here is what it actually says in its most recent video (which you can watch yourself at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6yiTZm0y1YA&feature=youtu.be), “Warming in the climate system is unequivocal” That means it is certain, unmistakable.  “Human influence on the climate system is clear.” That means that human activity is pushing global warming.  “Continued greenhouse gas emissions cause further climate change and constitute multi-century commitment in the future.” This means what we are doing now will have consequences for centuries.  “Therefore we conclude that limiting climate change requires substantial and sustained reductions in greenhouse gas emissions.” That is exactly what the president and many informed citizens want to do.

Brown dramatically concludes that Obama “is bending his knee at the altar of the pseudo-religion of an unsettled science.”

Would you rather the president follow the gross distortions of the science deniers or the conclusions of the climate scientists? Do you still believe the science deniers who said cigarette smoking is not harmful to your health? If a few quack doctors were constantly quoted in the popular press, including this paper, stating that there is no such thing as diabetes and there is no harm in eating huge quantities of sugar, would you urge diabetics to go off their medicines and join them in binging on sugars?

It is time we face the unpleasant realities of climate change and do whatever we can to change our actions, not only for ourselves, but also for all future generations. Like it or not, the seas are already rising and becoming too acidic for many forms of life. The ice and permafrost are melting, triggering even more rapid feedback cycles.  The intensity of storms and droughts is rising. Research the facts. Please don’t blindly believe the denials, no matter how frequently and loudly they are repeated.
