THOMASVILLE — Brookwood’s baseball team doesn’t know what to expect from Furtah Prep in today’s first round of the GISA Class AA playoffs.

With that in mind, the Warriors (14-9) haven’t worried about preparing for the Falcons (10-11) as much as improving themselves.

That inward focus ends today in a 4 p.m. doubleheader. If necessary, the third game of the series will be at 11 a.m. Saturday.

“We really don’t know a whole lot about them,” Brookwood coach Barney Myers said. “They’re a long way away and we really didn’t play any like opponents.

“It’s really the same way you prepare for anybody. For the most part, you’re working on the things, at this point in the season, where you may flaws.”

That recent change in strategy has paid off for Brookwood, as the Warriors exacted revenge from early season losses by routing Tiftarea Academy 12-2 last Friday to claim the Region 3 title and downing Southland Academy on Monday.

“We identified some things late in the season that we thought we needed to improve on, and that’s what we’ve been emphasizing almost all of our practice time on,” Myers said about the Warriors’ improvement.

That inward focus and a light schedule down the stretch has Brookwood fresh and ready to play, according to Myers.

“I feel like the practice the last few weeks has really helped us,” he noted. “I really attribute that to the fact that the guys have been really focused.

“You hope that you’re playing your best ball when you get to the tournament, and I certainly hope that’s what is happening with us.”
