Warriors ground Falcons

Staff report

THOMASVILLE — The Brookwood Warriors opened the GISA Class AA playoffs with a pair of convincing wins against the Furtah Prep Falcons 10-3 and 10-2 to advance to the second round next Friday against the winner of Windsor and Edmund Burke.

In game one, the Warriors scored four in the third inning on a Caleb Bryson grand slam. The Falcons responded with three of their own in the top of the fourth off starter Jeb Johnson. The Warriors, however, took no time in striking back in the bottom of the inning, as Brent Johnson doubled in Drew Balfour.

One pitch later, Brent Johnson trotted home in front of Jeb Johnson who hit a towering blast over the left-field fence for a two- run home run.

The Warriors padded their lead in the sixth when Scott Cheney’s triple down the left-field line capped the scoring.

Jeb Johnson threw five strong innings before giving way to Kevin Hudson who pitched the final two innings. Johnson struck out 8, allowed three hits and gave up only two runs. Hudson gave up two hits and struck out two without giving up a run to pick up the save.

In game two, the Warriors struck early, scoring four in the first.

Bryson, who moved to the leadoff role, stroked a double to left center. Brent Kinsey walked, and Brent Johnson bunted them to second and third before Jeb Johnson plated both with a double to left. Scott Cheney then walked ahead of Kyle Brown, who doubled to left, driving in Jeb Johnson and Cheney.

Kyle Brown pitched a complete game, picking up the win in game two. He gave up just four hits, striking out five, walking two and allowed a pair of earned runs.
