Senior Scott Cheney aims for third state championship with Warriors

Clint Thompson

THOMASVILLE — In his senior season, Scott Cheney doesn’t know how to lose.

The Brookwood quarterback’s football career ended with a GISA Class AA championship at home.

In basketball, the shooting guard’s career culminated with a state title in Milledgeville.

Now, the second baseman/pitcher finds himself in another title run as Brookwood opens the second round today against Windsor Academy with a 4 p.m. doubleheader.

“The coolest part is going out a winner every time,” Cheney said. “I still haven’t figured out how it would feel to lose and be done. It’d be sweet to go out, not ever knowing how it feels to lose and be done. That’d be awesome.”

The most important thing Cheney took out of his teams’ championship seasons was the ability to play with the season on the line.

“There wasn’t too much pressure in football, but basketball, for sure, there was a lot of pressure,” Cheney said. “I guess just not being intimidated by the fact that you’re deep in the playoffs or the state championship. Just get used to the atmosphere and stuff.”

That experience should aid Cheney and his teammates as they look to him for leadership.

“I think it’ll definitely help me to realize, play it like another game,” Cheney said.“I try to be the leader. We’ve got a good group of seniors, so everybody tries to lead by example.

“I just try to make sure everybody understands what’s going on. Be calm, and play it like a regular game.”

Added Brookwood coach Barney Myers: “Having been in that football run, then basketball, he’s an excellent baseball player as well.”

Cheney had a couple of key at-bats in the Warriors’ playoff-opening sweep of Furtah Prep. He laced a three-run triple that helped put game one out of reach.

In game two, Cheney scored a couple of runs and drove in a run with a sacrifice fly. Brookwood won both games easily, 10-3, 10-2.

An easy sweep will be much tougher to attain against the defending champs. But a second-round win will get Cheney closer to his ultimate goal of three state championships.

“Football, I started thinking about it,” Cheney admitted. “Then basketball. It’d probably be the best feeling ever. I don’t know how I’d describe it. It’d be awesome.”
