Brookwood ready for Pinecrest

THOMASVILLE — The second round awaits the Brookwood girls soccer team today.
The Warriors travel to Pinecrest Academy at 4 p.m. in the GISA Class AA playoffs and will face a tough task against the Paladins.
“They’re a possession-type team,” Brookwood coach Sheila McLaughlin said. “They’re looking to sit back and counter-attack when given the right opportunity.
“They’re probably one of the top teams in the GISA. They’ve beat teams, I think their first round was 12-0. We’re definitely not expected to win, but we’re going in there like we can.”
Brookwood (8-2-2) notched a 3-2 win in its playoff opener against Oak Mount.
“The first round, they definitely showed some heart,” McLaughlin said. “It was hot out there. I know Oak Mountain traveled, but our girls, they weren’t expected to beat Oak Mountain, either.”
Brookwood features a young lineup with two 8th-graders, two freshmen — Haley Caldwell and Paige Petrey — and just four seniors.
“I think the younger ones are stepping up,” McLaughlin said. “They’re probably, the most encouraging ones out here.”
The leader of the team is Logan Petrey. The athletic junior will be key to Brookwood pulling off another playoff victory.
“She seriously dominates all over the field,” McLaughlin added. “She really does. She won’t come off if you ask her to.”
Libby Coram also provides leadership for the Warriors as a captain.
“She’s an all-around team player,” McLaughlin said. “She’s a very good captain.”
