Johnson resigns from Brookwood

Clint Thompson

THOMASVILLE — An experienced Brookwood girls basketball team will have a new coach next season.

Shondra Johnson, who led the Lady Warriors to the GISA Class AA final four two straight years, has resigned to take a coaching position at Samford University in Birmingham, Ala.

“I knew when she came with us, she wouldn’t be here a whole lot of time,” Brookwood headmaster Mike Notaro said. “We were hoping it would be another year.”

Last season was Johnson’s second with the Lady Warriors. In her initial season at Brookwood, Johnson guided the Lady Warriors to a 16-6 record and a runner-up finish in Class AA. As for finding a replacement for Johnson, Notaro admits the task has not been made easier with school starting soon.

“I think it is a problem because we’re so late in the summer,” Notaro said. “I would think anybody right now is already under contract. That makes it a difficult thing.

“We’re kind of up in the air. We don’t know what we’re going to do,” Notaro added. “We’re kind of scrambling around trying to figure out what we’re going to do.

“We just hate losing her.”

Next season the Lady Warriors will have their third coach in four years. Whoever takes over will have a veteran squad to work with as Brookwood moves up to Class AAA.

Logan Petrey returns for her senior season at point guard. Fellow seniors Christy McMillan and Jordan Bell also should return.

Incoming freshman Hannah Notaro gives the Lady Warriors athleticsm at the forward position.

Kira Huntley also should provide size in the paint as she comes back for her junior season.
