Undersized Brewer leads Warriors’ defensive charge

THOMASVILLE — Paul Brewer may be small, but the Brookwood sophomore came up big Friday night.
With the Warriors’ missing mammoth defensive tackle Kyle Porter, Brewer helped fill the gap against West Oaks — creating havoc in the Flames’ backfield in a 47-20 win at Warrior Field.
“Paul just has it,” Brookwood coach Shane Boggs said of Brewer, who forced West Oaks quarterback Jaques Baker to scramble on several occasions. “Whatever it is, it doesn’t matter if he’s at defensive tackle, defensive end or linebacker, he just makes plays.”
Brewer was not alone in elevating his play Friday night. Sophomore quarterback Grant Latmore shook off a slow start — two interceptions in the first half and completing just four of his first nine passes — to play a near-perfect third quarter.
Following a 26-yard strike to senior Brent Kinsey to set up a late second quarter score and a 40-yard scoring pass to Rodger Walker to end the half, Latmore remained in a rhythm in the third quarter. The sophomore completed four of five passes for two touchdowns and 88 yards in the second half.
“It’s easy to come back from a perfect game and stay in a rhythm, but to come back from a sluggish start, Grant really kept his head up,” Boggs said, referring to Latmore’s four-of-four game against Westwood on Oct. 3.
Part of Latmore’s success was an improvement in the Warriors’ perimeter blocking. After Brookwood struggled to run in the early stages of the game, Boggs said the Warriors’ wide receivers stepped up their blocking efforts to spring some big plays, including a 24-yard touchdown pass to Keith Bentley. Fellow wideout Blair Austin cleared a path to the end zone for the senior.
