On the surface, what might have been just another Southern Conference football game (NCAA Division 1 FCS) between the Appalachian State University Mountaineers and the Wofford College Terriers was a special reunion of a sort for two Brookwood standouts who faced each other from opposite sidelines.
The Mountaineers had traveled from Boone, N.C., to play Wofford in Spartanburg, S.C., on Saturday, Nov. 16. After overcoming a halftime deficit the Mountaineers prevailed 33–21. When time on the clock ran out and the players from both sides exchanged handshakes, Thomasville natives Taylor Bragg and Rodger Walker greeted each other not only as adversaries but as friends and ex-teammates. The occasion marked the first time Brookwood athletes had ever competed against each other in Division 1 football.
“Rodger and Taylor had exceptional careers at Brookwood School,” Brookwood coach Shane Boggs said. “Both of them were recognized as All-State players before being recruited to play at the Division I level.
“They both have skill sets that would equate to success at any level.”
