Brookwood placed in AAA in new GISA reclassification

THOMASVILLE — It won’t be an easy road the next two seasons for Brookwood.

But, pending an appeals process, the Warriors are pleased with the Georgia Independent School Association reclassification results Monday that will align school for the next two school years starting in fall 2014.

With three Macon schools departing to join the Georgia High School Association as well as the departure of a handful more schools, including Sherwood Christian from Albany, for the Georgia Independent Christian Athletic Association, there was uncertainty and fear. How many classes would exist? How would they broken up? How would the regions be aligned?

In Brookwood’s case, it couldn’t have asked for a better result.

“That was one of the things we feared was something of a super region that would create several three- or four-hour drives,” football coach Shane Boggs said. “It didn’t create that.

“I think Brookwood will be really pleased. I’m not saying it’s going to be easy, because it won’t be. But I think they went about it, trying to create a competitive situation as well as a logical decision when it comes to travel. I think they did a good job accomplishing both, considering the limitations they had.”

The Warriors will be moving to Class AAA for the next two years — despite having just two classes, the GISA is calling them AA and AAA — and will be joined in a seven-team region in all sports. All seven schools hail from south Georgia, saving a considerable amount of travel. Joining the Warriors in the region will be current AAA schools Deerfield-Windsor, Southland Academy and Tiftarea Academy, as well as Terrell Academy, Westwood and Valwood, all moving up from Region 3-AA along with Brookwood.
