Stinging defeat

Brunswick routs Central

THOMASVILLE — Thomas County Central’s dreams of a Holiday Hoopfest championship were snuffed out in a semifinal clash with Brunswick on Friday.

The Pirates scored the game’s first 16 points, raced out to a 25-2 first-quarter lead and cruised to a 67-34 victory.

“They’re pretty athletic,” Central (5-4) interim coach Chad Ward said. “Our guys came out real flat. It’s hard to come back when you start off real slow.”

The Yellow Jackets struggled to keep pace with the Pirates’ quickness. Brunswick led 7-0 just 36 seconds into the game before Ward was forced to call a timeout.

“It’s real deflating because the guys work hard. Some of the shots just weren’t falling,” Ward said. “Some of the guys have got to get a little more courage when they’re on the floor. They’ve got to have that confidence to know if things aren’t going well, they’ve still got three more quarters to pull it together.”

Central’s only two points in the opening quarter came off two free throws by Matt Munroe.

Chris Jones and Devon Jones led the Yellow Jackets with eight points each.
