THOMASVILLE — Thomas University’s season began with a doubleheader split against Montreat College (N.C.) on Saturday at Varnedoe Stadium.

Andrew Crane delivered an opposite-field single in the bottom of the eighth inning to score Brandon Singer, as the Night Hawks prevailed 5-4 in game one.

In game two, Montreat knocked off TU 5-4.

Game three is set for today at 1 p.m.

“I think in the first game we did the things we needed to do to win the game. In the second game, we did not,” TU coach Mike Lee said. “We gave them too many runs. We can’t afford to make mistakes and we made too many in game two.”

The mistakes started early in game two for the Night Hawks. Montreat’s Tyler Hopkins singled with two outs to center field. But the Night Hawks outfielders bobbled the ball, allowing Hopkins to reach second base. Hopkins then attempted to steal third. Pitcher Kurtis Gens stepped off and tried to throw Hopkins out but the throw went awry. Hopkins scored the first run of the game, thanks to the second of three errors by the Night Hawks in game two.

“He should have never been on second,” Lee said. “It’s a single to right-center and all we’ve got to do is come up with it. The ball goes by and he takes second. They force the issue and we panic a little bit and didn’t make the play.

“That’s what we’re trying to do to them is put pressure on them and we didnt’ do it enough.”
