The Cairo Syrupmakers have already had success on the mat this season.
At their first tournament, they finished third in Lee County. Last week, the Syrupmakers finished fourth out in a 16-team field at Cook.
“We did really, really well,” coach Kevin Elliott said. “We’re expecting big things out of this team.”
Jacob McFatter won his class on virtually one leg.
“He banged up his knee pretty bad,” Elliott said. “He was up against the number one seed in the tournament, a kid he hasn’t been able to beat in the past. He pinned this kid in the second round. It was huge mentally for him, and it was great to see him win.
“He did a great job.”
Paul Coleman, McFatter and Deonta Williams are three returning seniors hoping to lead the team to another region championship.
The Syrupmakers won the region team duals and region championship in 2011.
