Despite their vantage points on opposite sidelines, coaches Ross Worsham and Shane Boggs saw the same thing Friday night.
The Brookwood Warriors are improving.
“Brookwood has a fine football team. They really played well,” Worsham said after his Westwood Wildcats escaped Warrior Field with a 33-30 overtime victory in the GISA Region 3-AA opener for both teams.
The Warriors piled up 413 total yards, including 349 on the ground. Quarterback Cale Deese paced the attack with 244 rushing yards. Deese got the call on 40 of Brookwood’s 62 carries, scoring twice.
“(Deese) was a workhorse,” Worsham said. “He hurt us. He sure did. He did a very good job.”
Deese’s most spectacular play occurred late in the third quarter. He zig-zagged 69 yards to the Westwood 4, almost tripping over his own feet at one point, to set up a touchdown run by Taylor Patterson that put the Warriors in front 20-14. The score was knotted 14-14 at halftime.
