The Thomasville Bulldogs enjoyed a Cherry-flavored victory at Veterans Memorial Stadium Friday night.
Mario Cherry scored all three of Thomasville’s touchdowns and accounted for 199 of its 225 total yards in a 21-6 Region 1-AA win over Early County.
The 5-foot-8, 182-pound senior rushed 24 times for 162 yards and added one reception for 37 yards. His lone grab on the final play of the third quarter, coupled with a Hunter James PAT, gave the Bulldogs a 7-6 lead.
Cherry absorbed several big hits throughout the contest, but he delivered a few, too.
“Mario does a good job of running behind his pads,” Thomasville head coach Leroy Ryals said. “Sometimes it sounds like a decent lick when he gets tackled, but when you run behind your pads — it’s all pads.”
Cherry, who tallied his first career touchdown on a short run in a 49-21 victory over Early County in 2010, racked up 62 yards on the ground in Friday’s scoreless first half. The Bulldogs, however, were derailed by an interception at the goal line and a fumble.
