The move has gone better than expected.
When Brookwood moved Garrett Harvard from outside linebacker to cornerback, coach Shane Boggs expected the senior to play well. But when the 4-4 Warriors travel to play defending GISA Class AA state champion Valwood — and the Valiants are undefeated at 7-0 — on Friday, Harvard has done more than play well.
“He’s played really well,” Boggs said. “There’s a bunch that have played well but that stat sure jumps out at you.”
And the numbers certainly back that up. Heading into last week’s game at Terrell Academy, a 42-35 win that moved Brookwood to 2-1 in Region 3-AA and with a chance to at least share the region championship if it wins out, Harvard was third on the team with 38.5 tackles.
Playing well in the run game is nothing new for the former linebacker. But his biggest impact has come when the opposing offenses take to the air. While switching positions, there hasn’t been much noticeable learning curve as Harvard has picked off six passes. Twin Walker Harvard has also excelled with the similar position switch as he has two interceptions to go with 35 tackles.
