Cairo’s Hill named 1-AAAA’s top offensive player

Jeremiah Hill made the most of Cairo’s seven region games.

The Cairo High School junior rushed for 1,008 in those seven games to earn the Region 1-AAAA coaches’ Offensive Player of the Year award.

Hill, who rushed for 1,118 yards and 15 touchdowns total, ran roughshod over most of the Syrupmakers’ region foes but his best performance came Oct. 11 against Worth County. In Cairo’s 42-28 win against the Rams, Hill set a new school record with 265 yards rushing on 18 carries. Hill, who started at linebacker for Cairo as well, added 191 yards and three scores against Monroe and 182 yards and three touchdowns against Americus-Sumter.

Westover, which ended Cairo’s three-year run as region champions as well as snapped the Syrupmakers’ 24-game region win streak, was honored with Trenton Thompson being named the region’s Defensive Player of the Year and Octavia Jones being named the Coach of the Year. Monroe’s four-year starting quarterback Charles Stafford was named the region’s Player of the Year.

Finishing second in the region and 7-4 overall, Cairo placed five other players on the all-region first team. Offensively, senior linemen Richard Walker and Tyler Sheppard were recognized as they opened holes for Cairo to rush for 2,223 yards as a team and total 2,941 yards of offense.

Andre Hadley was named to the first team at defensive line with 40 tackles, three sacks and two fumble recoveries, and Marcus Gaines, the Syrupmakers’ top tackler with 71 and 33 assists, was a first-team linebacker. Also making the first team was senior punter Taylor Donalson, who averaged 38 yards per kick.

Earning second-team recognition were senior wide receiver Reese Wooten, who hauled in 17 passes for 299 yards, and defensive back Dontavious Gurley. The senior had an interception.
