1-AAAA tourney under way
The Region 1-AAAA boys basketball tournament kicked off Monday with No. 6 Worth County taking on No. 7 Americus-Sumter at Dougherty. No. 8 Cairo v. and No. 5 Doughtery also played Monday.
Tuesday, No. 1 Monroe and No. 2 Westover have a bye. No. 4 Albany will play Worth County or Americus-Sumter winner at 5:30 p.m. at Crisp County. No. 3 Crisp County will collidge with the Cairo-Dougherty winner at 8:30 p.m.
On Thursday, the semifinals begin at Monroe. Seeds 2-3-5-8 play at 5:30 p.m. Seeds 1-4-5-7 play at 8:30 p.m. The third-place playoff will begin at 5:30 p.m. Friday with the championship game to follow at 8:30 p.m.
The Cairo High School Lady Syrupmakers started the Region 1-AAAA basketball tournament Monday at Dougherty when they played No. 7 Albany. No. 5 Crisp County played No. 8 Worth County at 7 p.m.
Today, No. 1 Monroe and No. 2 Dougherty had a bye. No. 4 Americus-Sumter will play the Cairo-Albany winner at 4 p.m. at Crisp County. No. 3 Westover will play Crisp County or Worth County at 7 p.m.
On Thursday seeds 2-3-5-8 will play their semifinal game at Monroe at 4 p.m. and seeds 1-4-5-7 play at 7 p.m. Monroe will also host the third-place playoff at 4 p.m. The championship game will begin at Monroe at 7 p.m.
Syrupmakers advance to state tournament
After a tough Class AAAA West Sectional tournament in Jasper over the weekend, five Cairo Syrupmaker wrestlers have advanced to the state championships.
Syrupmakers that advanced were Ryan Roberson (4th at 113 lbs.), Wilder Elliott (5th at 132 lbs.), Marcus Gaines (5th at 170 lbs.), Paul Coleman (7th at 160 lbs.), and Joseph McFatter (8th at 182 lbs.).
THE GHSA State Wrestling Tournament is being held at the Macon Centreplex in Macon Thursday through Saturday. Thursday admission costs $7. Friday and Saturday admission costs $10. The total tournament costs $24.
Thomasville teams set for region tourney
Thomasville High School’s boys and girls basketball teams are headed to the Region 1-AA tournament.
On Monday in the boys bracket, No. 6 Brooks County hosted No. 7 Berrien. Today, No. 4 Cook plays No. 5 Fitzgerald at 5:30 p.m. On Thursday, the No. 2 Bulldogs play the Early County-Brooks County-Berrien winner at Pelham at 5:30 p.m. No. 1 Pelham plays the No. 4 Cook-No. 5 Fitzgerald winner at 8:30 p.m. On Friday, the third-place playoff begins at 5:30 p.m. at Pelham with the championship game starting at 8:30 p.m.
On Thursday in girls action, No. 2 Thomasville heads to Pelham to play the No. 3 Early County-No. 6 Berrien-No. 7 Fitzgerald winner at 4 p.m. On Monday Berrein played Fitzgerald. Today, No. 4 Brooks County plays No. 5 Cook at Early County at 4 p.m. No. 3 Early County plays the No. 6 Berrien -No. 7 Fitzgerald winner at 7 p.m. On Friday, the third-place playoff begins at 4 p.m. at Pelham with the championship game at 7 p.m.
1-AA names all-region teams
The all-region boys first team includes Derek Dixon, senior, Thomasville; Reakeem Battle, senior, Cook; Tim Rose, senior, Brooks County High School; Antonio Wilcox Jr., junior, Fitzgerald High School; Jaquan Battle, junior, Pelham; and Devontre Jackson, freshman, Early County.
All region 1-AA boys second-team players are Andrew Parker, junior, Thomasville; Jakezmin King, junior, Thomasville; Javonte Moore, senior, Early County; D.J. Minor, senior, Fitzgerald; Chris Lissmore, senior, Cook; Art Slater, junior, Brooks County; Darius Spencer, junior, Pelham; and A.J. Wooten, junior, Berrien.

In boys action, No. 3 Thomas County Central is headed to No. 4 Lee County for a 7:30 p.m. game. On Wednesday, No. 6 Harris County goes up against No. 3 Bainbridge at 6 p.m.
On Friday, the seminfinals will be held at Bainbridge. No. 2 Hardaway will battle the highest remaining seed at 4:30 p.m. No. 1 Northside-Columbus will play the lowest remaining seed at 7:30 p.m.
On Saturday, the third-place game will take place at 4:30 p.m. at Bainbridge. The championship game will begin at 7:30 p.m.
On the girls side, No. 3 Thomas County Central will host No. 6 Harris County at 6 p.m. No. 5 Bainbridge heads to play No. 4 Lee County at 6 p.m.
The semifinals begin at 3 p.m. at Bainbridge on Friday with No. 2 Northside-Columbus battling the highest remaining seed and No. 1 Hardaway taking on the lowest remaining seed at 6 p.m.
On Saturday, Bainbridge will host the third place game at 3 p.m. and the championship game at 6 p.m.
Brookwood teams set for tournament
Brookwood’s boys finished second in GISA Region 3-AAA basketball. The Lady Warriors finished third. The Lady Warriors will play at Darton College in Albany in the tournament on Friday at 4 p.m. The Warriors will play following the girls game at 5:30 p.m.
