The Thomas University Athletics Department wrapped up a successful second year in the Sun Conference by finishing second in the TSC Commissioner’s Cup.
Embry–Riddle took home the Commissioner’s Cup for the 15th consecutive year by winning nine regular season conference titles to finish with an average score of 11.11. TU was second with a score of 9.00, just ahead of third-place SCAD Savannah (8.85).
TU’s runner-up outing is an improvement from its ninth place finish a year ago.
“We are thrilled,” TU athletic director Mike Lee said. “It shows tremendous improvement, and how hard the athletes and coaches have worked to get the program going in the right direction. We look forward to more success in the coming year.”
The Night Hawks captured their first conference title as members of the TSC when Men’s Soccer brought home the conference tournament championship back in November after finishing as league runner-up during the regular season. Men’s Golf gave TU their second piece of hardware during the 2013-14 school year when they secured a conference title back in April. TU also posted top-five finishes is baseball (third), softball (third), women's soccer (fourth) and men's basketball (fifth).
The Cup points are awarded in descending order to the 12 league members based on regular-season standings in the 15 conference sports – 12 for first place, 11 for second place, and so on. In addition, one bonus point is awarded to each of the tournament champions of those sports with a regular season conference schedule. Total points are then divided by the number of sports sponsored by each institution to get the overall scores.
“It’s something for the entire department to shoot for,” Lee said. “I think it shows consistency across the board.
“To finish second in only our second year in the conference, it shows that we were a good addition.”
