Final countdown

Teams get competitive look in annual 7-on-7 camp

You don't win with only 22 players. You win with a team.
As fall practice approaches, teams are finishing their 7-on-7 camps and coaches are honing in on final preperations for the grueling season.
Cairo's annual 7-on-7 passing camp is one of the last ones on the summer list and was a good way to give the players more snaps offensively and defensively as well as add some competition.
Six teams participated in three 40-minute game sessions. Bainbridge, Thomas County Central and the host Syrupmakers each lined up against Wakulla, Berrien and Miller County.
"I thought we threw and caught the ball well for a high percentage, which you kind of want to do in these things," Cairo head coach Tom Fallaw said. "I think our defense did a good job of not giving up a lot of really big plays, keeping everything in front. So, you know, there were some positives, but there's also a lot of stuff we gotta build on. It's a long season. We got a lot of kids coming back we just need to find some depth in some areas."
Second-year Berrien coach Ed Pilcher is also looking to build his depth chart as the season approaches so that the Rebels can avoid fourth-quarter collapses.
"At some time in the game everybody's going to be going both ways, at some point," said Pilcher, who spent 17 years as Central's coach. "We just hope not all the time. So that's what we're doing right now. We're establishing who can be the starters and who can be on offense and defense."
For Central, a team that focuses more on the run than the pass, the 7-on-7 camp was a good way to get its older players more looks at different formations and philosophies.
