TU sweeps College of Coastal Georgia

THOMASVILLE — Thomas University (7-10) swept a Sunday afternoon softball doubleheader 7-5 and 10-7 against the College of Coastal Georgia Mariners (4-5) at Armory Field.

Senior starting pitcher Summer Rose (1-2, 2 R, 3 RBI, BB, HR) used her bat to break open the game, hitting a three-run first-inning home run.

The Lady Night Hawks tacked on three more runs in the second frame and a single run in the third.

Rose cruised through four innings but ran into trouble in the top of the fifth. Coastal opened the inning with successive base hits and loaded the bases when a batter was hit by a pitch.

A double to right center cleared the bases to make it a four-run game, but Rose settled down and halted the rally.

Single runs by Coastal in the sixth and seventh made it a two-run bgame before Rose shut the door on the Mariners. Rose improved to 5-4, allowing five runs (four earned) on nine hits over the seven innings.

In game two, the Lady Night Hawks again jumped ahead early. TU used three first-inning hits and capitalized on an error to plate three runs.

The Mariners got a run back in the third but Thomas responded with two more runs in the bottom half of the inning, again taking advantage of a defensive miscue to make it a 5-1 game.

After Coastal-Georgia made it a 5-2 after 5½ innings, TU struck back with two runs. Thomas, like in game one, was unable to secure the win, allowing another big inning by Coastal when the Mariners sent 11 batters to plate in the sixth to tie the game at 7.

Thomas University’s Alex VanWagner tallied the eventual winning run on a fielder's choice and junior first baseman Carmen Nadal (3-4, R, 4 RBI, 2B) broke the game open with a double to give TU a 10-7 lead.

Senior pitcher Aimee Johnson (1-5) picked up the win with two innings out of the pen.

The Lady Night Hawks remain at home for another non-conference tilt on Wednesday when they face Reinhardt College in a doubleheader beginning at noon.
