The Thomas baseball squad capped a weekend sweep of host USC-Beaufort a week after dropping all three games to Embry-Riddle.
The Night Hawks won Game 1, 6-2, and Game 2, 7-5, on Saturday behind the bats. Thomas posted 20 combined hits in the doubleheader, and 38 overall this weekend.
“We didn’t play perfectly, but we played well enough,” TU coach Mike Lee said. “Guys swung the bats all weekend. USCB put some things together, we just put more together.”
Thomas cruised to victory in Game 1 by scoring a pair of runs in the second, third and fifth innings while never trailing.
The Night Hawks, however, fell into an early 4-0 hole in Game 2 but bounced back to score four in the fourth, one in the fifth and two in the seventh while holding the Sandsharks to just one in the eighth.
Ben Overman earned the win from the mound in Game 1; pitching all nine innings while allowing just four hits. Justin Hicks got the victory in the finale with a 3.1 inning performance that consisted of four hits allowed and three strikeouts.
“Our pitching was better today,” Lee said. “We were OK overall on defense.”
With the win, Thomas retains sole possession of third place in the Sun Conference standings. The top four qualify for the postseason playoffs.
“Another good weekend like this and it’ll pretty much assure us we’re in the tournament,” Lee said.
