It was one both teams scratched and clawed for.
Game 2 of Friday’s doubleheader between Thomas and Northwood went all the way to the 12th inning before Angel Garcia hit a two-out single down the right field line to bring home Randolph Ham, who reached on a leadoff single.
It was a loss that piggybacked a rough Game 1 defeat, in which the Night Hawks fell, 6-3, after leading through five and a half innings.
Northwood’s Roger Drouin not only notched a game-tying RBI with a two out single, but he also loaded the bases. Ham, in the ensuing at bat, brought home a pair with a double to right centerfield.
Northwood scored another three in the seventh and held Thomas scoreless until the Night Hawks mustered two in the ninth, but it was too little too late.
Thomas had ten hits in Game 1, but only crossed the three runs. The Night Hawks also left seven runners on base and posted three errors – bringing their season total to 51.
TU coach Mike Lee said earlier this week that defense has been a plaguing factor this season.
“You’d like to think that we’re making strides; it’s not like we’re not working on it in practice,” he said.
Thomas (16-14, 11-6) and Northwood resume play on Saturday with just one game that begins at 11 a.m.
