Gymnast Austin continues to pile up awards

MOULTRIE —

Thirteen-year-old Sterlyn Austin scored a 34.20 all-around at the Georgia USA Gymnastics State Meet that was held recently at Mountain View High School in Lawrenceville.

The Moultrie YMCA gymnast's performance earned her three individual medals and a trip to her first Region 8 Level 10 Championships.

Austin is no stranger to regional competition, as she has qualified, both in level 8 and twice in level 9. Region 8 consists of athletes from Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina and Tennessee.

She placed second on vault with a 9.0 score. Two of her competitors tied for first at 9.025. An 8.7 score earned her a sixth place on floor.

A fall from beam and an 8.7 score dropped her from the awards podium. She scored a 7.8 on bars where one new skill has caused her problems throughout the season. Her all-around total was good for sixth place.

“Sterlyn was understandably a little nervous early in the meet, but settled down. She needed an 8.8 on her last event to qualify with a 34.0, and she responded with a pretty vault and a 9.0”, said Coach Bob Swadel.

Sammie Phillips represented the MGs in the Level 9 Senior B age group. She placed seventh on beam, with a score of 8.375.

She added scores of 8.65 on vault, 8.575 on floor and 7.3 on bars, giving her an all-around score of 32.90.

Competing in Level 9 Senior C, Aubrea Callanta earned the sixth place medal for her vault score of 8.825 and scored 32.75 all-around.

She also scored 8.575 on floor, 8.05 on beam and 7.3 on bars.
