Back in the playoffs

’Makers home for first round for ninth straight year

THOMASVILLE — It's playoff time in high school football.

That means only one thing: The Cairo Syrupmakers are home for the first round of the postseason.

For the ninth straight year, the Region 1-AAAA champions will open the playoffs at West Thomas Stadium when they host the Riverdale Raiders.

The postseason experience the Syrupmakers have attained during Cairo coach Tom Fallaw's tenure should pay dividends for this year's squad, which has many players who will see time in a playoff game for a first time.

“It might be the first time they're playing in the game, but it's not the first time they've experienced the game,” Fallaw said. “I think that's key. Our program has been fortunate enough that we've played a lot of games the last four years. A lot of these kids have grown up being used to that. Even though it's a lot of their first time in the postseason playing, I would say they've gotten to experience it through the years.

“Now, they've played ten games under their belt. I don't think experience is a problem. I don't think the postseason is a problem because they've been able to be there with the rest of the team during the other years.”

Cairo has played in 79 games the last six seasons.
