Syrupmaker shut down: Worth County rebounds to win

THOMASVILLE —

Cairo suffered its second consecutive region loss in Thursday’s 5-3 road defeat to Worth County.

The Syrupmakers mustered just five hits and struck out 12 times – a stark contrast to their performance during their 5-0 start in 1-AAAA, coach Ron Best said.

“I think it was a combination of their pitching and our lack of execution,” he said of his team’s offensive performance on Thursday. “Their guy pitched a very good game and we just didn’t make the offensive adjustments at the plate.”

Cairo also accounted for five defensive errors, which led to three Worth County runs.

Best said he liked his players’ effort, but didn’t shy from attributing the miscues.

“Our kids tried the best they could. They were in the right positions, but weren’t physically able to make some plays. That’s on our players. Usually we’ve been playing very solid defense. We let our pitching down a little bit with the five errors.”

Tyler Dalton started from the mound and threw 5.1 innings before giving way to Brick Kinni, who threw the final 0.2.

Cage Cox was the only Syrupmaker to notch multiple hits with a single and a two-RBI double.

The latter manifested in the second inning, and gave Cairo an early 3-0 lead. But those scores were the only that Cairo could churn.

Best said Thursday’s game served as a proverbial wake-up call to his players, and exhibited the challenge ahead of potentially securing a region title.

Worth County and Crisp County, the team Cairo fell to on Tuesday, are considered the top two in the region, according to Best. Cairo has battled with Worth for the second spot the past two years.

“It’s not going to be any different this year,” Best said.

Cairo is off this weekend and returns to the diamond for a pair of games on Monday and Tuesday against Westover on the road and Monroe at home, respectively.
