Central wrestling sends record four to state

THOMASVILLE —

Thomas County Central sent a program high four wrestlers to the GHSA state tournament in Duluth this weekend.

Noah Harnevious, Weston Grove, Neil Williams and Conley Wilhelm all qualified, with the latter three reaching the second round on Saturday.

With that mark, the trio finished among the top twelve in Georgia in their first year of qualifying for the state tournament.

“It’s a huge accomplishment to our program,” said Central coach Bill Wilhelm, who has held his role since 1989.

The state tournament was postponed a week due to the multiple ice storms in Atlanta. Coach Wilhelm, who is also Conley’s father, believed the delay hindered the wrestlers’ mindset.

“It was kind of tough on them,” he said. They were all set and ready, and then they had to continue to maintain their weight.”

Harnevious and Conley Wilhem are sophomores and will return next season.

“They now know what it takes to get to that level again,” coach Wilhelm said.
