Cairo coach Ron Best echoed some colloquial jargon following the Syrupmakers’ 14-0 win over Early County on Friday: “Better late than never – because anything beats never.”
Cairo earned its first win of the season over the Bobcats to get the early season monkey of its back.
Yet despite the lopsided score, it was a tight tilt for much of the evening.
Cairo jumped to and a held a 1-0 lead all the way until the sixth before tacking on 13 in the final two innings.
“I really was pleased going into the top of the 6th only up one; I was thinking it would be sweet to win a 1-0 ballgame,” Best said. “That’s real baseball right there – tough, defensive, pitching.
“But I’m ecstatic that we hit the way we did.”
Best noted earlier that the Syrupmakers’ fundamental flaw early this season was within the batters box. So seeing his squad bounce back rang paramount above all on Friday.
“It should be a confidence builder for us. It’s been a process for us to improve each game and we did tonight,” he said.
