Shaver honored by Vince Dooley

THOMASVILLE —

Thomas County Central senior Kaylee Shaver is still pondering her college destination, and she’s pinned the University of Georgia as one of two finalists.

Perhaps encouragement from a distinguished UGA figure will guide her resolution.

Shaver is among ten female finalists for the Vince Dooley Athletic Scholarship, which is presented to an in-state boy and girl for their character and leadership both on and off the field, and for their contributions to sport and society.

The other female finalists – which include Elena Campfield (Forsyth Central), Brianna Cummings (Greater Atlanta Christian), Selina Dunbar (Westlake), Shelby Howard (Calvary Day), Katie O’Quinn (First Presbyterian), Hannah Pryor (Blessed Trinity), Ahide Rostro (Cross Keys), Emily Thurmond (Darlington), and Maggie Wellborn (Westminster)  – were honored at the McCamish Pavilion on the Georgia Tech campus on Saturday.

“It’s kind of funny that the Dooley event was at the Georgia Tech arena with Dooley being a Bulldog,” Bill Shaver, Kaylee’s father said. “But all in all, it was a very nice event.”

Kaylee Shaver is still deciding between Georgia, where she would participate in one of the nation’s top athletic training programs, or Carson-Newman, where should would continue her soccer career.

“We told her she needs to make her decision after spring break,” Bill Shaver said with a laugh.
