Northwood holds off TU women

THOMASVILLE —

You could almost hear the fat lady’s echo at halftime during Thomas University’s women’s hoops game Thursday.

The Lady Night Hawks, riding a three game losing skid, had fallen to a drastic 43-19 deficit before heading to the locker room against visiting Northwood.

Then Thomas surged in the second half, churning out 54 points and closing the lead to 11 before a late Northwood run yielded the Night Hawks an 82-73 defeat.

“It’s kind of been the tale of the story the last couple of games,” Thomas coach Coretta Brown said. “We kind of folded early but didn’t in the second half. We showed that fight and spirit.

“All of those quotes about hard work are typical, but true. It’s not what happens to you, it’s how you respond.”

Thomas’ 39.7 field goal percentage didn’t help, but the free throws were the deciding factor: the Night Hawks converted for just 15 of 25.

Thomas (11-11, 7-4) will look to end its four game losing streak on Saturday at Ave Maria. The women will precede the men in a double-header.

“It’s their senior night so they’re going to be pumped up and ready to play,” Brown said. “We will too, but we’ve got to prove that we can do it for more than just the second half.”
