BEST OF THE REST

THOMASVILLE — George Bobo remembers the play like it was yesterday.

The former Thomasville assistant coach recalled the moment Central’s Charlie Ward Jr., a future Heisman Trophy winner, eluded two of his teams best defenders for a jaw-dropping touchdown.

“We chase him to one side and he reverses field and throws across his body to Tommy Rainge, who catches it for a touchdown,” Bobo said. “We had Eric Curry at one end and Gary Simmons at the other end. Gary went to Troy State and Eric Curry went to Alabama. Eric was a No. 1 draft choice for Tampa Bay.

“We could not catch (Ward). That’s how good he was. Everybody always said, ‘Yeah, he’s as good as Charlie Ward,’ and all that. They would talk about players later on. Uh, uh, now. Ain’t but one Charlie Ward.”

Ward exemplified excellence, which is why the Yellow Jackets succeeded in 1987. For just the second time in the school’s history, Central won 12 games in a season. For the second straight year, the Yellow Jackets advanced to the state semifinal round.

“Charlie Ward, he was the most unbelievable athlete I’ve ever seen,” Bobo said.
