Diamond 'Dogs rebound to rout Pelham

Thomasville shook off its 9-1 loss to Brooks on Thursday and conquered Pelham, 11-1, in five innings to secure another mercy rule win

“They were the loosest I’ve seen all season,” coach Erik McDougald said of his team. “It was a totally different story from [Thursday]. Guys were very clam at the plate and completely relaxed.”

Thomasville first baseman Hunter Donalson brushed away any anxiety with his second grand slam of the season during the second inning. It gave the Bulldogs a 6-0 lead that they wouldn’t relinquish.

“When you get that kind of cushion, it puts you in relax mode,” McDougald said. “And you love to see four runs go on the board with one swing.”

Thomasville posted 12 hits on Friday – much improved from the five it had in the loss to Brooks.

The reliable Bayley Wright assumed the mound for the second time in three days – he tossed two innings in a bullpen-esque session versus Turner on Wednesday – and allowed just three hits and the one run.

The Bulldogs eye two non-region games next week against Cairo and Jefferson County, then resume 1-AA play on Thursday against Cook.

Thomasville (11-9, 4-5) is still on the outside looking in for a spot in the state tournament despite Friday’s win.

The ‘Dogs have three region games to go – all of which will be on the road.

“That part doesn’t bother me,” McDougald said. “And from what I can tell, it hasn’t been a big thing for our players, either. ... It’s just another bus ride.”
