Brookwood schedules second round series

THOMASVILLE —

Brookwood has officially slated its second round state baseball tournament series against Stratford.

The teams will open the best-of-three GISA AAA contest with a Thursday doubleheader beginning at 2:30 p.m. on the campus of Macon-based Stratford.

Should a rubber match be necessary, it will commence at 11 a.m. on Saturday as to not interfere with Brookwood’s baccalaureate on Friday night and graduation ceremony on Saturday night.

The Warriors will trek to and stay in Perry – roughly the halfway point of the 160 mile journey – on Friday  night after the ceremony should that be the case.

“The best thing we can do is win two of them [on Thursday] and not have to worry about that,” Warriors coach Ken Johnson said.

Brookwood is coming off a first round sweep of top-ranked Pinewood after 7-5 and 5-4 wins last Friday and Saturday, respectively.

The No. 4 Warriors will again be the underdogs against second-ranked Stratford – at least by seeding.

These teams played five times last season, four in favor of Brookwood, including a sweep in the playoffs.

“I think our success against them last year gives our kids confidence,” Johnson said. “There is no fear this time around. Our guys will be ready.”

Brookwood (17-9) held a full, two and a half hour practice on Monday, and will trim its Tuesday and Wednesday sessions to just 90 minutes by cutting work in the batting cage.

Johnson said the emphasis during practice will heavily lean on fielding work and minimal batting practice.

“The things we need to make sure we’re clear on are making routine plays,” he said of his defense. “We can’t give them more than the allotted outs per inning. They’ve got to understand that doing so adds more pitches to the count.”
