'Sun' shines on Night Hawks

THOMASVILLE — Fresh off an extra-inning win Friday night, the Thomas University Night Hawks continued the excitement into the opener of Saturday’s doubleheader at Varnedoe Stadium. They defeated the Florida Memorial Lions 4-2.

The Night Hawks won their inaugural Sun Conference game when junior shortstop Hugh Russell Lee’s single to shallow right center plated sophomore right fielder Brandon Singer (2-5, 2 R, HBP) with the game-winning run in the bottom of the 11th. Russell went 3-for-6 with an RBI

It was TU’s fourth walk-off win of the year.

The Night Hawks got going in the fourth inning on Saturday.

With the bases loaded and two outs,  sophomore center fielder Corey Conway singled to shallow right, scoring sophomore first baseman Josh Bruijn and third baseman Matthew Brady. Sophomore designated hitter Brent Slaughter then scored after a wild throw that allowed Conway to advance to third.

Senior second baseman Brett White’s double to left center brought Conway home.

The Lions put one run on the board in the sixth and seventh innings. The left the bases loaded in the top of the eighth.

The results of Saturday’s second game were not available at press time.
