Thomasville went toe-to-toe with one of the top heavyweights in Class AA Friday night.
Just when it appeared the Bulldogs had scored a knockout blow on the defending Region 1-AA champs on their home field, the Brooks County Trojans delivered a shot of their own.
Thomasville quarterback Payton Dixon fired a 13-yard touchdown strike to Javier McGriff in the corner end zone. McGriff made a sensational catch over a Brooks County defender late in the fourth quarter. However, Brooks County responded with a scintillating catch of its own as Deric Herring snagged a 71-yard touchdown pass from Malkom Parrish to stun the Bulldogs at Veterans Stadium in Quitman.
Brooks County’s defense stopped Thomasville’s fourth-down attempt on its next possession and won 30-23 to stay undefeated in region play.
“They’re a good football team. They’ve got a lot of great athletes. They play hard,” Thomasville coach Leroy Ryals said. “They represent coach (Maurice) Freeman very well. My hat goes off to them. They were very resilient to come back like they did.”
