TU sends program high ten swimmers to NAIA championships

Day one of the NAIA championships from Oklahoma City are in the books.

Thomas competed in a few events on Friday, including the men’s 200 medley, the women’s 200 medley the men’s 50 freestyle, the women’s 50 freestyle and the 200 individual medley.

Kyle Goller, Victor Vassallo, James Clutch, Tan Dang and Igor Dos Santos. combined to finish tenth in the 200 men’s medley. The lot of Nicole Hawkins, Madison Osterlund, Zephinah Barney and Megan Walker finished 15th in the same event for the women. Both groups set season best times in the event.

Osterlund also set a season high time in the 200 individual medley.

Barney posted a best time in the 50 freestyle and finished 42nd out of 56 swimmers.

Justin Akins (29th, 21.72 seconds), Vasallo (30th, 21.75 ) and Dang (45th, 22.47) also competed in the same event for men with 50 other swimmers.

Friday marked the first day of the three day meet. Thomas will compete in many more events on Saturday and Sunday, but coach Malcolm Hosford couldn’t estimate a specific number.

“It was a pretty positive day,” Hosford said. “It kind of sets up what we’re going to do the rest of the weekend.”

Thomas sent a program high ten swimmers in just its second year.
