Coming off their first region defeat in four years, the Cairo Syrupmakers have been here before.
In fact, Cairo coach Tom Fallaw remembers the Syrupmakers being at a similar turning point in 2009. The same 2009 when Peach County downed the Syrupmakers 24-13, the most recent region setback before last week’s 14-9 loss at Westover.
That year, Cairo was 3-3 after that loss to the Trojans and were 1-2 with a bye week prior to starting Region 1-AAA play.
“We were talking about it, in ’09 we were sitting there at 1-3 or 2-3 and right where we are now with an off week and we didn’t think that team was very good,” Fallaw said. “Then all of a sudden as it started getting cooler, we started running off some wins and we ended up going to the third round of the playoffs that year.”
Indeed they did. The Syrupmakers finished 9-4 after rattling off six straight wins before falling 32-19 to Gainesville in a quarterfinal.
Now though the Syrupmakers (2-3 and 1-1 in Region 1-AAAA) have to find a way to spark that same kind of turnaround. Despite Cairo’s struggles — it has scored 49 points in five games — Fallaw said the ingredients are there.
