CAIRO — Big plays, more than 700 yards of offense, and 78 combined points made for an interesting homecoming Friday night. In the end, the Cairo Syrupmakers finished the regular season undefeated in Region 1-AAAA at 7-0 and 8-2 overall with a 56--22 win over the Dougherty Trojans at West Thomas Stadium.

The Syrupmakers ended the night with 436 yards of offense. The Trojans racked up 328 total yards on a night highlighted by big plays from both teams.

After the Syrupmakers scored on an 18-yard pass from Donald Thomas to Dontra Anderson, Dougherty answered with a 20-yard pass to Madarious McWhorter from Michael Whatley. Dougherty then picked up a two-point conversion to take an 8-7 lead with 56 seconds to play in the first quarter.

Cairo's P.J. Davis, who finished with 14 carries and 188 yards, scored on runs of one yard and 27 yards to give the Syrupmakers a 21-8 lead with 5:46 to play in the half.  However, the Trojans weren't finished as they scored again on a 62-yard pass from Whatley to Jared Kiser.
